English author Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) authored the brilliant  poem “If—” , and a number of well-known stories such as “Captains Courageous” and “The Jungle Book.”  He is thought to have finished The Jungle Book whilst staying at Brown’s Hotel in London, where he often wrote while taking tea in the tea room there.*  Tea is mentioned often in his writings, and his poem “Natural Theology” contains a stanza that has become a very well-known tea quotation:

We had a kettle: we let it leak:
Our not repairing it made it worse.
We haven’t had any tea for a week.   .   .
The bottom is out of the Universe!

Mr. Kipling had a tea connection.

But wait – there is another Mr. Kipling in England with a tea connection: Mr. Kipling “exceedingly good” cakes. Tea and cake? Now that’s a connection!

Mr. Kipling is (and has been since 1976) the number one cake brand in the country. More than 60% of us hide the box from our kids and husbands so we can have them all to ourself buy them for our families. They are perfect with a cup of tea.

The product range includes large cakes and small cakes, pies, tarts, and slices. My favourites are: Mr. Kipling Battenbergs; Mr. Kipling Victoria Mini Classics (little individual Victoria Sponge cakes – lovely!); and Mr. Kipling Jam Tarts. My stomach is growling.

Not long ago, Mr. Tea and I arrived at the local Tesco to do our weekly food shop and were greeted by this adorable little Mr. Kipling Cake to Go van. Isn’t is CUTE??!! It was touring the country, handing out free Mr. Kipling cakes – and I got three one!
